As our dogs get older, it’s heartbreaking to see them slow down. Arthritis, stiffness, or just the natural ageing process can make even the simplest movements harder for them. But here’s the good news: with the right low-impact exercises, you can help your senior dog stay comfortable, mobile, and confident for longer.
One of my favourite stretches for older dogs is called “Paws Up” – and it’s simple, safe, and easy to teach. Even if your dog has arthritis, past injuries, or joint issues, this movement can be adapted to their comfort level.
👉 Before we dive in, I’ve put together a FREE 2-Minute Comfort Checklist for Arthritic Dogs. It’s a quick guide you can use daily to check in on your dog’s mobility and comfort.
And don’t forget to watch my step-by-step YouTube tutorial (linked below) to see “Paws Up” in action.
What is “Paws Up”?
“Paws Up” is an active stretch where your dog places their front paws on a low, stable surface (like a step, block, or sturdy stool) while keeping their back paws on the ground.
It looks simple – but it’s powerful for building strength, mobility, and balance in older dogs.
How to Teach “Paws Up”
Hold a treat at your dog’s nose and slowly lure them toward the surface.
Reward them for any paw contact – even just touching it at first.
Start with something low, like an upside-down banana box or step.
Progress slowly to slightly higher surfaces as your dog gets more confident.
For a stretch: let them sniff or lick the treat while holding the position for 3–10 seconds before rewarding.
Tip: Keep sessions short, fun, and positive. Your senior dog’s comfort comes first. 💛
Benefits of “Paws Up” for Senior Dogs
Unlike passive stretches (where you move your dog’s limbs), this is an active stretch – your dog is in control, working within their comfort zone. That means less risk of overstretching and more natural movement.
Here’s why it’s so good for older dogs:
✅ Supports Arthritis-Friendly Movement – Gentle range of motion without strain
✅ Front-End Flexibility – Opens shoulders and chest, improving mobility
✅ Core & Back Leg Strength – Builds stability and balance for weak or stiff dogs
✅ Confidence Boosting – Especially helpful for dogs recovering from surgery or those who’ve lost confidence in their bodies
✅ Improves Body Awareness – Enhances coordination and reduces risk of slips or falls
✅ Joint-Friendly Strengthening – Perfect for arthritic, overweight, or post-surgery dogs
Why Senior Dogs Love It
Older dogs often get frustrated when they can’t move like they used to. “Paws Up” is empowering because they do it on their own terms. It’s safe, it feels good, and it gives them little “wins” that build confidence and joy in movement again.
